Final Project: 90 sec Video

Abstract: For our final project we created a 90 sec video about three friends who engage in an epic fight of rock paper scissors.

Research/Planing:
Storyboard:

Production Log:
For this project, we started brainstorming ideas first before anything else. My first idea was very big and involved. After much thought this idea was scraped. My partner and I brainstorm some more and came up with another idea. An epic fight between three friends involving the classic game rock paper scissors. We created an entire story around this fight including scenes before and after the fight. We then devised a small scripted (see post) in which we fleshed out the roles of the characters. We used this script as a spring board for the actual production.
Once we had our idea down packed, we started filming. Filming took a total of 6 hours including outtakes. In order to keep our filming organized, we shot our video in pieces. We filmed each scene in sequence, watched it and then refilmed when needed. Once we had all our footage, we began the editing process. The editing took another 2-3 hours to complete. We spiced our footage together, using transitions to blend them together. We later added sound effects and a song "the final countdown" by Europe to our production. Once we finished our edits we viewed the final edit and finalized out production.
Self-evaluation:
Initially I had wanted to create a production around my first idea which was the story of the lonely girl, a girl who wishes for friend and is not happy with the results. Unfortunately, we soon realized that this would be difficult, and quite time consuming. Not only this, but it would have been well over the 90 sec limit of the video. Instead we brainstormed again and came up with another idea, epic rock paper scissors. This was perfect for our project parameters as it was a short and simple idea. If we had more time with this project, say an entire semester, I would have liked to do my previous idea. I would have gotten more people involved on the project and would have tried to make the video a feature length film.

Exercise 2: The Lumire Brothers

For this project, I had to create a minute of footage that payed homage to the lumire brothers' way of filming.  The camera had to be placed on a object so there was no shaking. Then a minute of footage that captured an action was taken. No edits were allowed to be done except for some trimming at the end.

Exercise 1: Archive footage Edits

For this first exercise I gathered footage from Archive.com and edited it using various tools in Final cut. The footage was found footage from 50s reels. I also used a music track I found from Archive.com.
Various filters along with layered footage and various cuts were used to try and make the video look degraded. I wanted the footage to have a possessed feel as if the cars in the background weren't suppose to be there but were haunting the viewer.

Midterm:

For my midterm I decided to do a portfoilo. I gather most of my strong piece that I felt reflected my storytelling style the best, and complied them.

 Production Log:

This photo was apart of the photo correction series. For this photo I used vibrance, levels, curves, and other correction tools to improve both the color and lighting of the photo in order to make it look more better. I also turned the lighting of the photo towards the green side in order make it look more natural.

This photo was also apart of the color correction series. For this photo I used color correction tools with the burn tool to get a more 'toasty' feel with the picture. I took this picture in this position on purpose as I liked the composition of the statue.

This photo was apart of the composition series. I took art from the buildings around campus and composited them in nature images I took myself. By doing I wished to create a mystical feel, as if the photo itself was telling a fairytale.

This photo was also apart of the composition series. I took art from the buildings around campus and composited them in nature images I took myself. By doing I wished to create a mystical feel, as if the photo itself was telling a fairytale. The fish and mermaid are apart of the same piece of artwork.

This was an original photo taken by me at night. I wanted to experiment with lighting at night so I took a photo of the small forest outside of the library. I learn a lot about correcting photos with this images and found that it is difficult to correct shadows and lighting in dark photographs. The photo will usually become grainy if you lighten the photo to much.

This was apart of the grid set. With this photo, I want to experiment with bringing non-real figures into the real world. I used my tablet to draw animals in environments similar to where they would be in real life. I found this set to be quite whimsical when I finished it and enjoyed the story each one portrayed.

Exercise 5: Masking

In this assignment the masking tool was used to composite two images together.

Exercise 4: Color Correction

For this assignment image correction tools in photoshop were used to correct a original photo taken by myself. The upper photo is the original photo, not corrected. The bottom is the corrected photo.

Second Exercise: Composite

  • With this set, I choose to convey a mystic feel. I also wanted to try putting the tangible with non tangible to see what would happen.
